Koi-Koi is a popular card game in Japan that is played with Hanafuda cards. It is one of the variations of Hanafuda, a traditional Japanese playing card game, and is typically played by two players.
The objective of the game is to create specific combinations of cards, known as "yaku," before your opponent. The phrase "koi-koi," which means "come on" in Japanese, is often exclaimed by players who wish to continue the hand.
In Koi-Koi, players accumulate cards in a point pile by matching cards from their hands or drawn from the draw pile with cards on the table. When a player successfully creates a yaku, they can choose to stop and cash in their points or continue playing (referred to as "koi-koi") to form additional yaku for increased points. The assigned point values of individual cards do not impact the score directly but are helpful in assessing their value when forming yaku.
